The Monarch competitive season began with the Calling Auckland, held at Auckland's famous Aotea Center in the heart of Auckland city. Day 1 featured Monarch sealed deck, with 244 players choosing to either stand with the Light of Solana or consume the world of Rathe in Shadow. A resounding 69% of players sided with Solana on day 1, with Prism and her heralds reigning supreme.
Would day 2 see the resurgence of the Shadow heroes? After 6 rounds of booster draft, a star studded final 8 players remained. The first conflict in the war of Light vs Shadow would be decided with a final booster draft. When drafting at the highest level, half the battle is won or lost before the first game is even played. The final draft pod saw a huge preference for the Light heroes, with only 2 players, Matt Rogers and Kiki Labard, prepared to turn their hand to the dark arts.... and rewarded they were. The 2 Shadow drafters swiftly cut their way through the scrambling Light defenses and found themselves face to face at the final table.
Kiki beat Matt to a pulp over the early turns of the game, smashing him with big trees and rumbling death, that established a huge life point lead for the Shadow Brute. However, as Matt bound his soul to the dark arts, his dimenxxional power was amassing. Patiently Matt was crafting a game plan that would allow him to rip the fabric of reality from beneath his opponent, with a violent onslaught that grew from the seeds he had planted many turns prior. The tempo of this encounter whipsawed back. With both heroes on 1 life, the initiative was with Chane, and whether he could conjure a second point of arcane damage to overcome the Ebon Fold that stood between life and death for Levia. With 5 Soul Shackles in the arena, it all came down to the fifth and final card to be banished off the top of Matt's deck....
The anticipation was palpable, but Matt Rogers knew he had lured the Brute exactly into his Shadow trap. The fifth and final card banished from the Soul Shackles was the Seeds of Agony that Unhallowed Rites had put on the bottom of his deck on turn 1 of the game!
