Calling: Dallas-Fort Worth Recap

25th Oct 2023 Kasharn Rao

Another slam dunk for the Flesh and Blood Pro Play Circuit took place last weekend with the Calling at SCG CON in Dallas-Fort Worth!

The talented Lexi has finally crossed the threshold into Living Legend, but this time the show was stolen by the fiery fervor of Dromai! With Pro Quest in full swing and Calling: Melbourne a door knock away, we'll be diving into more meta analysis later this week.

For now, let's see how things played out at SCG CON...

DFW Calling Start

More than 280 players rocked up to Texas to duke it out for Gold Foils, PTIs, and $20,000 USD! Classic Constructed was the name of the game, and this time Lexi went up in smoke. Dromai is the new mean queen on the block, so start packing those poppers!

Gui Cohen, now a master of his craft, picked up the ancient imperial tomes from the still-warm clutches of the Emperor's corpse, and rode his dragons to victory through an absolutely stacked top cut bracket! Congratulations!

Top 8

1st: Gui Cohen - Dromai, Ash Artist

2nd: Matthew Vore - Dromai, Ash Artist

3rd-4th: Jacob Baugh - Dromai, Ash Artist

3rd-4th: Michael Jaszczur - Lexi, Livewire

5th-8th: Michael Feng - Lexi, Livewire

5th-8th: Merrick Kemp - Dash, Inventor Extraordinaire

5th-8th: Yuki Lee Bender - Lexi, Livewire

5th-8th: Nicholas Tran - Dromai, Ash Artist

More than 90 players cracked packs of Bright Lights in the Sealed Deck Battle Hardened to prove who was the Big Shot and would be going home with the Gold Foil, PTI, exclusive playmat, and share of $2,000 USD!

You won't believe this - everyone in the Top 8 drafted Mechanologist! In all seriousness, the lesser-drafted Dash managed to boost onto the scene this time, but couldn't outmuscle Teklovossen or outpace Maxx Nitro. She remains the most interesting and challenging hero in Bright Lights to draft, one that rewards very careful deckbuilding choices.

Congratulations to Tucker Campbell for leveling the competition!

Top 8

1st: Tucker Campbell - Teklovossen

2nd: Florin-Cristian Loghin - Maxx Nitro

3rd-4th: Kirk Huber - Teklovossen

3rd-4th: Cody Fuller - Teklovossen

5th-8th: Austin Somers - Maxx Nitro

5th-8th: Eric Dauernnheim - Dash, Database

5th-8th: Dave Lin - Maxx Nitro

5th-8th: Claire Stanfield - Maxx Nitro

With plenty of open entry side events on offer, players were never short of excitement! The weekend kicked off with special prizes rewarded for collecting bounties in the Sealed Deck challenge, meanwhile budget beatdowns commenced at the Commoner tables.

Rathe's most marvelous tailor Rachel Stoddard delved into the chaos of Ultimate Pit Fight, piloting none other than the shapeshifting seamstress Taylor! Nothing could be more fitting, except maybe a life-sized Nitro Mechanoid!

The lucky few who competed in Welcome to Rathe Alpha Draft went home with stunning treasures of whimsical proportions. Enlightened Strike! Tome of Fyendal! Cold Foil Helm of Isen's Peak!

Thank you so much to each and every one of you who joined us at SCG CON for the Calling! Thank you to our special guests, stream casters, coverage team, judges, event staff, and amazing host Star City Games for making this weekend possible!
