Recap: Skirmish Season 7, Week 1

Aug 03, 2023 Kasharn Rao

We're back for another round of Skirmish, and you're all no doubt reeling from the reveal of Bright Lights and all the crazed contraptions it contains.

This season of Skirmish has launched with a bang, with three formats to dive into, as well as an updated Blitz ruleset that players appear to be loving. Feedback so far shows the added flexibility has really patched some glitches and makes the format a lot more dynamic and fun.

We've had some next level content from great players, such as Kieran Carnegie's masterclass Kano guide, and Brodie Spurlock's secret tech for becoming a better player, and we have even more cutting edge content on the way (including some shiny new meta analysis fresh off the assembly line).

Let's suit up and throw down as we look at highlights from the past week!

"24 prominent players came to our Monarch draft Skirmish. We had 4 different heroes in the Top 8, a very nice meta. Allen Lau went undefeated and won the playmat and cold foil Genesis! His final round was devastating, piloting Chane, never giving Jack Tang's Levia any chance to counter his attacks! Our lucky draw winner was Clement Cheng."

1st: Allen Lau - Chane

Runner Up: Jack Tang - Levia

"Storm Gate Games had over a dozen players descend upon us last weekend to draft Monarch for Skirmish Season 7 and despite the odd numbers everyone had a blast. We had a pod of 8 and a pod of 4 drafting that day and the skill really showed. Despite the theoretically higher quality decks in the smaller pod; we ultimately saw a showdown between two members of the larger pod that demonstrated skill and good decision-making in their picks. There were laughs all around and everyone had a brilliant time playing this game that we all love. Congratulations go out to Colin and Xi Shern for giving us a memorable and nail-biting final! On a side note; congrats to Thinesh of Enigmagix who pulled his very first Doomsday which will go into his Levia deck! Thank you LSS for making all this possible and for creating opportunities to bring like-minded folks together through the common language of great games!"

"This Skirmish was a great success, with a lot of players and a lot of fun. Blitz Preconstructed was a great opportunity to gather new players and veterans alike, for 5 rounds and a Top 8 full of exciting battles. 18 players with their heroes from History Pack 1 challenged each other for the win. Bravo and Kano were the most popular heroes, but one Dash rose above all else to claim the title of Champion. At the end of the day everybody had a good time and our community grew even stronger."

Runner Up: Andrei Suciu - Kano (HP1)

"Our event counted 18 participants for two rounds of Monarch draft, with a mix of local players, Montreal area competitive mainstays, and some new faces! The final match of the day featured Julien Bergeron on Levia against last year's R2N champion Jonathan Lemire on Prism. With the match favoring Prism early on, Julien patiently built up his graveyard in order to turn the tables on the Illusionist with a double red Dread Screamer + Ravenous Meataxe turn. A dominated red Writhing Beast Hulk boosted by a Warmonger's Recital sealed the deal on the following turn, eating up Prism's remaining life points."

1st: Julien Bergeron - Levia

Runner Up: Jonathan Lemire - Prism

"First and foremost thank you so much to LSS and Alan Hale for the opportunity to host the sanctioned event. Thank you for being so sweet and supportive all these years.

The event was empowered by every hobby community that supports our store. Players from every game joined the veterans of FAB to learn the game for the first time and invest in decks. Veteran players and TO Bryan Hefner went well out of their way to dedicate the entire week to teaching and supplying new players with learn to play events as well as free singles. We were able to use the Skirmish as a way to teach new players how to play FAB simultaneously while the veterans were still able to compete and happily teach new players.

The community wanted to make sure that LSS knew how grateful we were for the opportunity to host and we would do much more to earn opportunities again. We were able to use FAB as a way to empower our entire store by working together with every community to host a Blitz Skirmish. People who don't normally get to play together finally had their first chance and familiar faces or new players from the wild met new friends for the first time. No one really cared about winning or losing, they just cared about learning the game and making sure every member of the community, new and current, were having a great day.

The sportsmanship was very strong and even reminded players to uptick tunic. Every round we raffled 1-2 booster boxes. Players pulled some of the most expensive cards of the game and earned their entry back tenfold. Ice cold water bottles were donated to allow people to enjoy FAB hydrated. Booster boxes and the highly coveted Prism/Vynnset sleeves were flying off the shelves.

As a store owner, meeting new faces from all over the world was an absolute treat. The folks I have never met until today were some of the kindest and humble human beings I was grateful to host an event for. The farewell slang from everyone was "See you in Vegas for The Calling!"

This is a very serious indication that the FAB community has hearts of gold. These players go above and beyond, driving 2+ hours in traffic to support these events. We did everything we could to let these amazing human beings and treasures of the TCG community know that we appreciate them."
