We're taking a look at three different countries leading up to the 2023 National Championships, talking to local players, game stores, and content creators. Join us as we travel the globe to meet Flesh and Blood fans and hear their stories. This week we land in Germany, a vibrant country with stunning scenery and no shortage of places for a weary traveler to sit down and have a brew!
From cars to castles to composers, Germany is packed full of adventure and whimsy.
Germany is home to more than 83 million people, and more than 20,000 castles, some of which date back to as far as the 9th century. With bright coloured buildings, and a beautiful landscape of mountains, forests, and rivers, stepping into Germany is like stepping into a fairytale.
Flesh and Blood came to Germany in late 2020, and since then German players have consistently reached the top tables at major international tournaments like Callings, Pro Tours, and even Worlds!
We're looking forward to seeing who rises to the top at the National Championship, and can't wait to share some great games and a cold brew with our German friends at World Championship: Barcelona!

How did you discover Flesh and Blood?
A friend encouraged me to play this new TCG that had just been launched in Europe and told me that a new set (Monarch) was just about to release.
Ein Freund hat mich ermutigt, dieses neue TCG zu spielen, das kürzlich in Europa veröffentlicht wurde, und hat mir erzählt, dass bald ein neues Set (Monarch) erscheinen würde.
Who is your favourite hero?
Prism, Sculptor of Arc Light, because I started playing Classic Constructed with her and played her until she went on to become a Living Legend. Her matchups were always very polarizing and it was a challenge to find a build that could balance her against very aggressive decks.
Prisma die Erzlichtformerin – mit ihr habe ich begonnen, Classic Constructed zu spielen, und sie war mir eine treue Begleiterin, bis sie in die Reihen der Living Legends aufgenommen wurde. Ihre Matchups waren immer sehr polarisierend, es war eine Herausforderung, ein Deck zu bauen, das gegen sehr aggressive Decks bestehen konnte.
How are you feeling about the upcoming Germany National Championship?
I hope to not have to sleep on the Autobahn due to a burning car on the road like last year's National Championship, or being robbed right before the World Championship like last year. That would be great.
Ich hoffe, dass ich nicht so wie bei der letzten National Championship wegen einem brennenden Auto auf der Autobahn schlafen muss, oder unmittelbar vor der World Championship ausgeraubt werde, so wie letztes Jahr. Das wäre genial.
Who will win the Germany National Championship?
One of the Sebastians. Either Kleiner or Golla. Both are great players.

What is your favourite thing about playing Flesh and Blood in Germany?
I love the local community growing in the south of Germany. They have some quite strong players.

How did you discover Flesh and Blood?
That's explained rather quickly. During the time between Arcane Rising and Monarch one of my best friends suggested we started with Flesh and Blood to build up a new hobby together. And after the first set it went out of control rather quickly.

Während der Zeit zwischen Arcane Rising und Monarch hatte mir einer meiner besten Freunde von Flesh and Blood erzählt und vorgeschlagen, dass wir beide damit ja anfangen könnten um ein neues Hobby gemeinsam aufzubauen und dann war es auch schon direkt mit dem ersten Display um uns geschehen.
What is the local Flesh and Blood community like?
I'm quite happy with the local FAB community that we have built up here in Kiel. It's a very open and friendly community that is always happy to welcome new players into their ranks, from casual to high competitive.
Ich bin froh über die FAB Community, die wir hier in Kiel gemeinsam aufgebaut haben. Wir haben eine sehr offene und freundliche Community, die immer darauf bedacht ist neue Spieler:innen willkommen zu heißen und von Casual bis High Competetitve ist hier alles vor Ort vertreten.
How are you feeling about the upcoming Germany National Championship?
Sadly I wont be able to make it to the event this year myself but I'm very happy about the fact that some the players out of my community were able to qualify for the event.
Leider habe ich dieses Jahr selber keine Zeit um vor Ort zu sein, aber ich freue mich sehr da drüber, dass es Spieler aus unserer Community geschafft haben sich für das Event zu qualifizieren.
What format do players in Germany enjoy most?
I think it is really hard to say which is the most liked format in Germany since the playerbase is really diverse. Here in Kiel we play mostly Blitz and Classic Constructed and just toss in a Sealed or Draft from time to time.
Ich glaube es ist schwer zu sagen, welches Format deutschlandweit am beliebtesten ist, da die community stark gemischt ist. Hier in Kiel wird hauptsächliche zwischen Blitz und Classic Constructed gewechselt und ab und an mal mit Sealed oder Draft erweitert.
What has been your favourite Flesh and Blood event in Germany so far?
It has to be the first National Championship in Germany, where I was working as judge. But mostly I enjoyed finally meeting all the people in person instead of over Discord.
Das ist nach wie vor das erste National Championship in Deutschland, ich selber war vor Ort als Judge tätig und habe mich am meisten dadrüber gefreut so viele Leute aus der Community endlich einmal live kennengelernt zu haben.

How did you discover Flesh and Blood?
The first time Flesh and Blood really caught my eye was in Steve Aoki's video revealing the Heart of Fyendal Test Print. The packaging, James' personal message, and the Lore Book looked stunning and drew me into the World of Rathe. The first time I got my hands on real Flesh and Blood cards was in October of 2021, where I visited the Spiel Convention in Essen. The beauty of Tales of Aria which was freshly released made my TCG heart jump. Since then I have been on a journey to discover everything about this game, its community, and the fantastic story behind it.
Das erste Mal, dass mir Flesh and Blood wirklich ins Auge gefallen ist, war in Steve Aoki's video als er das Heart of Fyendal Test Print gezeigt hat. Nicht nur die Verpackung und James persönliche Nachricht, sondern auch das Lore Book waren atemberaubend. Das hat mich in die Welt von Rathe gezogen. Das erste Mal, dass ich Flesh and Blood Karten in der Hand hatte, war aber erst Oktober 2021. Da habe ich die Spiel Messe in Essen besucht. Die Schönheit von Tales of Aria, was gerade erst rausgekommen war, hat mein TCG Herz höher schlagen lassen. Seitdem befinde ich mich auf einer Reise, um alles über das Spiel, seine Community und die fantastische Geschichte dahinter zu erforschen.
Which booster set is your favourite?
That is a tough question. Welcome to Rathe is definitely a masterpiece. My favourite one has to be Tales of Aria though. Each of the three Elements in this set brought a whole new level to competitive play. That's been shown by both Briar and Oldhim with their Pro Tour titles, as well as Lexi's consistent presence in the meta for the last six months.
Das ist wirklich eine schwere Frage. Welcome to Rathe ist ein Masterpiece. Mein Lieblingsset ist allerdings Tales of Aria. Alle drei Elemente in diesem Set haben ein komplett neues Level für die kompetitive Szene mitgebracht. Das wird nochmal unterstrichen durch Briar und Oldhim's Pro Tour-Titel sowie Lexi's Präsenz in der Meta der letzten 6 Monate.
How are you feeling about the upcoming Germany National Championship?
It will be the first National Championship that I go to in any TCG. Sadly I can only go on the last day, but that is the big one. I am very curious to see which players will make it to the Top 8. Last year I had the honor to get to know many great players and I know some of them have very good chances of being on top. But Calling: Antwerp showed that Germany has a few underdogs which are not on everyone's radar. That makes me excited for Nationals.
Das werden meine ersten Nationals, die ich jemals in einem TCG besucht habe. Leider kann ich nur am letzten Tag dabei sein, aber das ist der entscheidende. Sehr gespannt bin ich darauf, wen ich in der Top 8 sehen werde. Letztes Jahr hatte ich die Ehre, viele der besten Spieler kennenzulernen, und ich weiß das einige davon gute Chancen haben, oben dabei zu sein. Calling: Antwerpen hat gezeigt, dass es in Deutschland noch einige Underdogs gibt, die wenige auf dem Schirm haben. Das macht die Nationals sehr aufregend für mich.
What has been the most exciting moment of 2023 so far?
Michael Feng, Andrew Rothermel, and Brodie Spurlock making it to the Top 8 of Pro Tour: Baltimore. Following these amazing players and personalities around the whole weekend and then witnessing the unbelievable happening. Team Wolf Pack!

What's your message to players competing in the Germany National Championship?
I wish every player from Germany all the best for the National Championship. I am thrilled to see what kind of ideas and strategies you come up with. Of course only one of you can be the champion, but I hope everyone can take something home that they are proud or happy about.
Ich wünsche allen Spielern aus Deutschland das Beste für die Nationals. Ich bin sehr gespannt, was ihr für Ideen und Strategien mitbringt. Natürlich kann nur einer der deutsche Meister werden, aber ich hoffe jeder kann etwas mit nach Hause nehmen, auf das sie stolz oder froh ist.
