Hero Zone: Katsu

3rd Oct 2019 Jason Chung

A lone figure emerges from the mists, dark eyes gleaming beneath the brim of his straw hat. Behind his easy smile and fluid grace, something lingers; a clap of thunder on the horizon. He is the calm before the storm, a tempest stored in the palms of his hands. Following in the footsteps of his forefathers, he searches for a way to bring peace to his clan.

Swift as a Coursing River

Ninjas are all about agility and speed. They occupy the low cost end of the spectrum, but what they lack in power they make up for in speed.

Ninjas excel at attacking multiple times in a turn with low cost attacks and weapons that can attack fast. Harmonized Kodachi is the first one-handed weapon we see in Flesh and Blood, but you shouldn't underestimate its size. Spreading the power between two separate attacks will make enemies think twice before throwing away half their hand to defend.

One consideration when building a Katsu deck is to have a high presence of cost 0 to be able to play multiple cards in a turn, attack with kodachi, and for Katsu’s hero ability.

Although one attack may not be threatening, a flurry of coordinated attacks is. Katsu is about playing multiple attacks in a specific sequence for powerful effects.

The combo mechanic rewards playing attacks in a perfect sequence much like the techniques of martial arts.

Assembling the Combo

You may think it would be quite hard to assemble such a sequence of attacks. Luckily, as we mentioned in yesterday’s article, you can play up to 9 of each common and rare attack to maximise the chance of assembling combo attacks.

The ability to play up to 9 of these cards allow you to enable a devastating combo multiple times over a game of Flesh and Blood. Even then, getting exactly 1 of each card in your 4 card hand doesn’t come easily - but here’s when Katsu comes in.

Katsu (zoom)

Katsu has a unique effect that allows you to search for the missing piece of the puzzle. Note that you require an attack-action card (not weapon) to hit to trigger his ability but it does not have to be a card that’s part of the combo or even a ninja attack. Any attack-action cards with go again excel in triggering Katsu’s ability.

Put Your Opponent to the Test

Not only do they have to worry your hero’s ability to search any card you want, but Katsu has some powerful attacks that are ready to strike defenseless heroes. Ninja’s have access to powerful hit triggers that will make their foes think twice before letting an attack through.

Strike Once, then Strike Again

If you are ready to outmaneuver your enemies with a flurry of attacks and put your opponent to the test with every attack, then Katsu’s your man.
